How To Stabilize A Parked Travel Trailer

By Nancy White

Instability of a trailer will ruin an otherwise fun camping experience. Trailers are convenient because they take away the trouble to set up a camp using tents. Trailers will also provide excellent security and a feeling that you are indoors. This also comes with a great deal of comfort. While at it, you have to deal with the issue of how to stabilize a parked travel trailer.

Campers might wonder why too much attention is focused on stabilizing trailers. The truth is that this is the secret to enjoying a good use of such a camper. If your unit is not stable, slides, drawers and doors will malfunction. In the process, the items stored within are damaged or broken, especially during retrieval. This may cause injuries to the campers beyond damaging your personal effects.

Without stability, the entire trailer could easily be damaged. When the swing is too wide, it will get out of balance and may cause the entire camper to fall. It becomes expensive to tow it back and will eventually ruin your camping expedition. You need to move to a ground that is a bit level. When this is not available, you must use necessary mechanisms to find stability.

Stabilizers used on trailers are not meant to support a lot of weight. Their design and the materials used for manufacturing the stabilizing gadgets are indications that they are not meant for holding weight. Ensure that your wheels and other units hold the most weight and can sustain the position for a long time. Get customized stabilizers or use the ones that come with trailers.

Most trailers and fifth wheels have leveling systems sold during acquisition. During purchase or fabrication, ensure that you get the tools that are naturally designed for stabilizing. They include a section of wooden blocks that are two by ten inches. You will get between four and eight of such blocks to be used below the levers or stabilizers you are going to use. The blocks can also be used below jacks to prevent the jack from digging into the ground and thus causing further instability.

Stabilizers are built alongside cabins. By placing them strategically at the ends of the cabin and shaft connecting the cabin to the truck, they achieve perfect balance. If the cabin was not bought with ready levels, they can be custom made for you. They come with adjusting mechanisms to enable you change the height and orientation of your cabin to achieve stability depending on how the ground is leveled.

First ensure that your camper is stable from side to side. This is done using the wheels and by choosing a relatively stable ground. Use leveling blocks and lock the wheels to ensure that they cannot move. It is after side to side stability has been achieved that you can move to front and back swings. Chock the tries and apply brakes.

The stabilizers are lowered to the level that will enable you achieve stability. Add the blocks appropriately and on the shaft connecting to the truck if your cabin is not too long. Maintain boards in good condition to ensure that they do not break under pressure. Choose a level and solid ground to reduce chances of sinking and instability.
